A day in Ronda: dramatic views, historic streets and a scenic drive

Ronda is a striking change from the Costa del Sol. Set above a deep gorge, it combines historic streets with views that make you want to stop and take your time. Treat it as a dedicated day trip rather than a quick detour between coastal destinations.

Plan the drive before departure

Routes into the hills can include bends and steep sections. Choose a route suited to your comfort behind the wheel, check the forecast and leave a generous margin for the journey. Driving times depend on your starting point, traffic and route. Do not treat an estimated arrival time as a deadline, and only stop at designated, safe places—not on a roadside bend to take a photograph.

Make Puente Nuevo your first landmark

Puente Nuevo connects the two sides of Ronda above the gorge and is the town’s most recognisable sight. Begin with views from the town-level public areas, then cross towards the historic quarter. Stay behind barriers and follow any temporary access restrictions. You do not need to descend into the gorge to enjoy the landscape.

Explore the old quarter slowly

South of the bridge, the old town offers a quieter change of pace. Walk towards the streets around Santa María la Mayor and consider a visit to the Mondragón Palace or the Arab Baths if their current opening arrangements fit your day. These are optional additions, not a requirement to enjoy Ronda. Choose one or two interiors and leave enough time to appreciate the town itself.

Allow time for viewpoints and lunch

The town’s public viewpoints provide different perspectives on the surrounding countryside and gorge. Some paths are sloped or uneven, so choose a route that matches your mobility and the weather. Take a proper lunch break rather than turning the outing into a sequence of photo stops. Good walking shoes, sun protection and a layer for cooler conditions are useful additions to your day bag.

Keep the return journey comfortable

Park in a signed public car park and visit the centre on foot. Narrow historic streets are not a useful shortcut. If you are unfamiliar with mountain roads, plan to return with daylight to spare and avoid adding another distant town late in the afternoon. Check live traffic before leaving Ronda, and take a break if you are tired. The best version of this day has room for the drive as well as the destination.
