Marbella / COASTAL ESCAPE

Marbella beyond the marina: old-town charm and coastal walks

Marbella is often associated with glamorous marinas, but its old town and seafront offer a very different pace. Make space for both: a morning in the historic streets, a long lunch and an afternoon beside the Mediterranean.

Begin around Plaza de los Naranjos

Start in Marbella’s historic centre, where whitewashed buildings, small shops and narrow lanes surround Plaza de los Naranjos. The square is an easy meeting point, but the streets around it deserve just as much attention. Wander without trying to turn every corner into a scheduled stop. An early visit can make the experience more relaxed, especially when the coast is busy.

Explore on foot

The old town works best as a walking visit. Leave the car in a suitable public car park outside the pedestrian lanes, then follow the streets towards the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación. Wear shoes that are comfortable on uneven surfaces and remember that some lanes can be narrow. A map is useful for orientation, but the appeal is often in the small courtyards and details you notice along the way.

Spend the afternoon on the promenade

After lunch, head towards the seafront. Marbella’s promenade provides a straightforward change of scene from the old town: sea views, beach stops and a gentler walking route. Choose a short stretch if you want a relaxed afternoon, or allow more time to walk farther along the coast. Pack sun protection and drinking water even outside the height of summer.

Add Puerto Banús only if it fits your day

Puerto Banús is a separate stop rather than part of the old-town walking route. Its marina, shops and waterfront offer the more polished side of Marbella. If that interests you, drive over after the old town and plan parking before arriving. If your priority is atmosphere rather than shopping, staying longer in the historic centre and along the promenade is an equally good choice.

Plan the drive from Málaga

Check live navigation before departure. The coastal journey can vary substantially with traffic, and some routing options use toll roads. Review the route and any tolls before starting rather than changing plans while driving. On busy days, choose fewer stops and build in spare time for parking. Marbella is a full-day outing on its own; adding a mountain-town excursion to the same day can turn a relaxed escape into a long drive.
